Reducing the cost of supplies

Reducing the cost of supplies

I'm always attempting various projects, so why not share what I learned along the way? I do a lot, so I'll be doing a lot. Today, let's talk about what I learned while designing a bubbler sign.

Reducing the cost of supplies

Have you ever tried lavender lemonade? There’s something special about how lavender pulls on your tongue and nose to get its flavor across. Pair that with evenly sweet and tangy lemonade, and you’ve got yourself a treat. Native Foods has themselves a treat. I noticed the sign above the bubbler could use an update. Being made of paper made it susceptible to liquid damage. Replacing the sign, though minor, is costly. Let’s make something to avoid that.

Goals

  • Design a new, water-resistant sign
  • Design an insert for the sign; different titles will live on the inserts
  • Print both parts

Tools

  • AutoDesk Fusion 360
  • iPhone Measure app
  • Cura
  • Ender 3 Pro

Jumping right in

The original signs are flat pieces of sturdy paper folded in half. This allows them to hold themselves up and creates two surfaces for writing on.

To model this, I started by mimicking the triangle shape of the sign's profile. Each side of the triangle will be 2 1/2 inches. All three sides were then extruded 4 inches, creating the face of the base.

What I Learned:

  1. Looking at the early rendering, I questioned the stability of the inserts. I should consider adding slots for magnets to give it additional support.
  2. Parts might be too big to print together. Consider printing one at a time.
  3. Went back and forth over how to approach the insert. Should it be angled and flat or straight and flat? Ultimately went with angled and flat.

How'd I do? The slots made for magnets didn’t turn out during the printing process, but luckily the inserts have a snug fit. The sign is water resistant, and stands to hold up longer than the paper versions. No additional hardware is needed after the inserts are printed.

Something I didn’t notice before this process; the visibility of the sign has increased. If you know anything that could help me out, help me out. Each one, teach one!
